Optimizing for Google AI Overviews

Google now writes an answer above the search results. If your business isn't in it, you're invisible before the first link. Here's how to get in.

A Google-style AI overview panel assembled from trusted source nodes above a list of links

Google put an AI-written answer at the top of a lot of its results, above the familiar blue links. They call it AI Overviews. For businesses, the implication is stark: for many searches, the overview is now the first — and sometimes only — thing a person reads. If you're not in it, you can rank on page one and still be functionally invisible. So a real question I get constantly is how to be included. Here's what I've learned works.

Understand what the overview is doing

An AI Overview synthesizes an answer from multiple sources Google trusts, and cites some of them. It's Google's own answer engine, sitting on top of everything Google already knows about the web and about entities. That means two things. First, classic Google fundamentals still matter enormously — this isn't a separate universe. Second, the overview specifically favors content that's clear, well-structured, and trustworthy enough to be safely summarized.

Ranking earns you a spot in the list. Getting into the overview earns you a spot in the answer. Those are now two different competitions, and the second one happens first.

The signals that get you included

From working this across businesses, the levers that matter most line up with everything else in GEO, with a Google flavor.

  • Strong existing search fundamentals. Fast, crawlable site; genuinely useful content; healthy technical SEO. The overview draws from sources Google already respects.
  • Clear, extractable answers. Content that leads with the answer and structures the facts, so Google can lift a clean summary — the core of the answer engine playbook.
  • Entity clarity. A well-defined, consistent business identity that Google can resolve and trust. This is entity authority again.
  • Strong local signals. For local queries, an optimized Google Business Profile, reviews, and consistent local citations heavily influence what shows up.
  • Corroboration. Facts about you that multiple trusted sources confirm.

Practical moves for local businesses

If you're a local operator, the overview competition is very winnable because it leans on signals you can directly control.

Nail your Google Business Profile

For local searches, your profile is a primary input. Complete it fully, keep it accurate, categorize it correctly, and keep reviews flowing. I go deeper in Google Business Profile optimization.

Answer local questions on your site

Create clear content answering the specific questions local customers ask — service details, areas served, pricing approach, process. Structured, honest, local-specific content gives Google material to build a local overview around.

Keep your facts consistent everywhere

Inconsistent name, address, or phone across the web undermines the entity clarity the overview relies on. This one unglamorous fix punches above its weight.

A note on realism

I won't pretend anyone can guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview — Google controls the box and it changes constantly. What you can do is make your business the kind of clear, trusted, well-structured source these systems are designed to favor. Do that, and you improve your odds across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and whatever comes next, because they all reward the same underlying qualities. That's why I optimize for the fundamentals rather than chasing any single platform's quirks.

What the overview means for your website strategy

There's a real fear underneath all this that I want to address head-on: if Google answers the question itself, does anyone still visit my website? The honest answer is that the overview changes what your website is for, but it doesn't make it irrelevant. Two things stay true. First, the overview cites sources, and being the cited source still drives qualified visitors — people who read the answer, want more, and click through to the business the answer trusted. Second, for anything involving a real decision — hiring a contractor, choosing a provider, spending real money — people still want to see the actual business before they commit.

So the strategy shifts from "capture every click" to "be the trusted source the answer is built on, and make the site that follow-through visitors land on genuinely convincing." Your website becomes less of a catch-all and more of a proof point: the place that confirms everything the AI implied about you. That's a website worth investing in, and it's a good discipline anyway — it forces clarity about who you are and why you're the right choice.

The overview didn't kill your website. It changed its job from winning the click to earning the trust that makes the answer name you.

Practically, that means auditing your most important pages with one question in mind: if a customer arrived here right after an AI told them you were the right choice, would this page confirm it or undercut it? If the page is vague, dated, or hard to act on, you're losing people the answer already half-sold for you. Tighten those pages, make the next step obvious, and you turn AI-driven trust into actual customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI Overviews replace traditional rankings?

Not entirely — the links still appear below the overview, and rankings still matter. But the overview often gets read first, so being in it is increasingly important on top of ranking well.

Can I opt out of being used in AI Overviews?

There are technical controls around how your content is used, but for most businesses the goal is the opposite: to be included and cited. Being in the answer is visibility you want.

Why does my competitor show up in the overview and I don't?

Usually stronger fundamentals, clearer extractable content, better local signals, or a more trusted entity. An audit will pinpoint which. See why your competitor outranks you.

Is optimizing for Overviews different from other AI search?

The fundamentals are shared — clarity, structure, trust, corroboration. Google adds its own weighting toward established search signals and, for local, the Business Profile. Optimize the fundamentals and you help yourself everywhere.
